Ever seen a pet in the torn ... no... why?
Because they suck...!!!!
I must say I am really dissapointed with the pet system they are usefull at the start of the game but at the end they suck...
Things that could make pets viable.
Having a skill that heals the pet and lets you take a pet along.
A Elite pet spell...... WHY no elite pet spell? (same with Necro minions WHY?)
A Better system to manage pets atm Im using 5 skills and Im still having trouble keeping my pet alive and Im a bl**dy monk!!.
Is there somthing im doing wrong or do they just really suck.
Please help.

Firstly, Ferocious Strike is an Elite pet skill and would be very useful for you as a Monk primary as it will help with energy management.
Secondly, what is your Beastmastery level ? I'm finding that getting it as high as possible is the key to an affective pet. If 5 of you eight skills are dedicated to your pet and it's anything less than 12, you need to rethink.
As for a better system of managing pets, yeah, I agree. They are even less responsive than henchmen. They won't act on shift+ctrl+space, they don't switch targets, and they never flee. Henchmen aren't perfect, but I would be happy if my pet just reacted the same as they did.

You don't see me making threads about how firestorm is useless in PvP.
Or how frozen soil sucks for PvE.
Not everything is meant for PvP and vice versa, I have to agree, pets suck for PvP.

I used pet to beat PvE and win HoH several times. Pets don't suck. You suck at using them.

o.O how can you not keep your pet alive? Mine never dies, in PvP he explodes at the end of the round when we lose... I think you need more points in beast mastery, or you're taking the wrong skills.

A Mo/R would be a bad beastmaster, since he'd have to sacrifice so many skill slots toward making his pet effective, and put very few toward being a healer.
People expect pets to be useful with very little to no points in beastmastery. Charm Animal is a skill, and just like any other skill, if the relevant attribute is low, the skill sucks.

It all goes back to the Ranger Build. They seem more adept (for PvE) to small groups and using tactics and landscape to thier advantage. In this respect, pets work awesome. We did Gates of Kryta yesterday with 3 characters for the hardest part, which is when you have to enter the swamp and kill the undead. We had a level 14 Ele/Me, a level 13 R/Mo, and my level 11 Me/R. With no real healing, our pets had to be our warriors and take the brunt of the poison/damage and we had to use the landscape to win.
For PvP? As mentioned in other threads, as more and more people realize what a Mesmer can do, you can dedicate a Ranger with a pet to hound a Mesmer. They won't be so quick with hexes and counterspells when they have to run from constant melee damage and some dude poisoning them. No one does this though, because as with pets, they get shortsighted and think all a Ranger should be doing is using traps.

Im a Healing Mo/R
Specifically only for one reason. So that my bear can be my bodyguard. I never attack, so anything which attacks me, my bear goes for... which is good.
But after accension, i can't use my pet anymore. Because.. well he dies, then my healing skills get locked off for 8 seconds, and people die. Great huh? I really don't have the spare points to put into beastmastery, so in the end, i never equip Charm animal now. I don't at all use any ranger skills :S
So yes, i think pets are rather useless. I find i end up healing my pet so often and don't have enough energy to heal other people.
Also btw, doesn't just increasing beastmastery, just increase attack? It doesn't increase defence or hp... (therefore hes a rather poor bodyguard now).

Are you saying pets are useless because they don't go well with your monk? I coulda told you that. Pets are not bodyguards. Have you ever tried using a pet as a ranger primary?

Pet's aren't very strong unless you devote a decent amount of attributes and skills to them.
But why should they be?
When you DO do that, the pet is about as strong as a warrior, if you built it right.
I took my pet to the 4 vs 4 arena as a ra/mo smiter/beastmastery/expertise beast master, and it ate people up rapidly. I asked a monk how much it was hurting her when she died, and she replied, "A lot. More than the hammer warrior."
Keep in mind, if a warrior were buffed as much as my pet, he'd be pretty darn strong too. But this is a single person with a pet, acting ALMOST as effectively as 2 people. And the pet does focus fire decently now.
Yes, it takes a lot of effort to get your pet up to speed, but if you do, then you've just added an extra warrior to your team.
If multiple people use them, the calls get a lot more effective, since only 1 of each call need be used to provide the full effect for each pet.
As of my last arena match, I had 3 smites, rez signet, and 4 beast mastery linked skills.
Ferocious strike is an awesome skill, by the way.
+29 damage and 10 energy at 16 attribute beast mastery for the cost of 5 energy. Less energy cost with expertise. I had 9 expertise, dropping the cost to 3, and giving me 7 extra energy every 8 seconds, along with a bit of extra damage.

any enemy necro would thank you for bringing a pet. Why? ... For the healing targets and extra corpses. perhaps there are classes that don't like seeing pets, but necros love em.

I Really Dis-Agree
I Used To Try This
I Have A Monk/Ranger
And I F***king Farmed With Her
......
Ive Done Farming With Her,
She Had 8 In Marks(Just Enough For Bow)
12 In Beast Mastery
And Rest In Wilderness Survival
And Yes We Can Kill Pretty Good
We Have Those Attributes
And
Skills As
Feral Lunge
Barage
Comfort Animal
Barrage
Apply Poison
Pin Down
Ferocious Strike
Spirit Of Favorable Winds.......
Pets Work Good In PvP
Ive Saw One While I Was In A HoH Group
...IT Did Bleeding To Me And Also Did Cripling
The Ranger Itself Used Poison Arrow.....
And Saw Massive Damage OverTime.
LoL
So IMO Pets Are Good

Fair enough, but if I'm consistantly making achievements with pets, that must mean that they do have good qualities and they aren't a total flop (see: suck).
I use my pet in everything (Save UW trap grous, where I actually enjoy devoting everything to Wilderness). I have gotten quite a few compliments in my time. However, I do not need anyone to tell me whether Pets are good or not. Sometimes, it is only the player who can tell how well they perform. Ask any necro - in most teams, nobody is wowed by them, nobody gives them praise or thanks "or wow, you saved us at the last moment!", but any Necro worth his salt will tell you he contributed to the fight just as much as anyone else have.

I'd like to see this tested. Pets have 0 armor penetration and no AP skills, warriors usually have 10% base from Stregnth and then skills like Penetrating attack. Frenzy is also faster than Call of Haste, and they have 80 armor as opposted to the pet's 60.

Funny, I took my Warhog to the 4 v 4 arena and couldn't drop an Ele, even while spamming Ferocious Stike (+25) and Beastial Pounce (+16 and Knockdown).
The real power of the hammer is the knockdown skills. Those axe warriors are the scary ones damage-wise IMO.

The problem is that it's VERY hard to have a good pet with a good archer backing it up. It's easy to have a decent archer who can interrupt or a Warrior who can knockdown consistantly.

I still disagree. Hammer knockdowns and Axe damage are both vastly superior to pets in my experience. Maybe you've added another sword warrior, but nobody wants them.

Possible, but I don't think calls actually affect your allies' pets. They might have secretly fixed this, but I've heard complaits about it not working in the past.

Is it any better than Bow attacks with 16 Marksmanship though? You still need your expertise to spam them, regardless of which path you go down, so you can't max both.
Beast Mastery is far too demanding to use as a suppliment to your bow attacks, and it's not exceptional enough to get many people to base their builds around them. Pets are not as bad as people think, but they're not outstanding either.
In response to the opening question: yes, just not on a winning team. I've only seen 4 of them though, and only 1 was on a team that was 1v1-ing my team. The other 2 were on already-dying teams in the FFA round. The last one was on my team when I was playing my Monk, but the guy who was using it was kicked because he never actually placed Fertile Season, which ment that the other FS guy had to try and keep it up by himself.

Actually, the pet Spider is rumored to have random armor penetration. I have the spider myself... but seeing as I have no way to review the actual damage numbers I do hit-per-hit, kinda hard to test it. When I ask differant people how much damage m pet was doing I get "A lot", then I ask how much and they say "About 25-45". Now that's quite a high range of numbers... so something must cause it to be inconsistant.

This talk of smiting monks and pets got the wheels in my brain turning....
How does zealot's fire and pet skills interact? If you throw it on the pet will it activate when you use pet skills?
